Analysts identified a coordinated pro‑Israel online campaign that sought to frame the episode around migration, security and European policy, deepening the diplomatic row that follows the 2023 Gaza war. On 6 August the Spanish Civil Guard issued a six‑page open‑source report warning of a possible coordinated mass crossing on 15 August. The analysis, based on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp, found groups with between 400 000 and 422 000 members discussing logistics but could not estimate participant numbers. It noted that the outcome would depend heavily on preventive measures taken by Morocco on roads, transport hubs, the town of Fnideq and the coastline. In parallel, false claims circulated that Spain would open the border, grant automatic asylum or financial aid, and that anyone reaching Ceuta could not be returned. These rumors were amplified by actors on both the far‑right and far‑left, but have been repeatedly debunked. Spain installed a 500‑metre floating barrier at the border; the death toll rose to at least 67. Moroccan authorities were urged to tighten road and coastal controls around Fnideq.
