Ceuta mpox case prompts calls for improved migrant health surveillance
Spanish Health Minister Mónica García has called for strengthened epidemiological surveillance in Ceuta following the detection of an mpox (monkeypox) case in a 13-year-old Moroccan minor. García noted that the detection itself demonstrates the effectiveness of current sanitary monitoring systems.
To ensure effective disease control, the Minister emphasized the necessity of housing migrants in dedicated facilities. She argued that providing proper shelter is essential for conducting diagnostic tests, administering treatments, and performing contact tracing. García stated that it is “indispensable that all migrant persons cease to live on the streets” to avoid the risks associated with overcrowding and unsanitary conditions.
In addition to the mpox case, the Minister reported the detection of five cases of smallpox and eight cases of tuberculosis in the region. She praised the coordination between health services and local authorities in Ceuta but criticized political opposition from the People's Party and the local government, urging them to stop obstructing the management of the migration crisis.
