Ceuta President issues 30-day ultimatum to Spanish government over migration crisis

Juan Vivas, the President of Ceuta, has issued a 30-day ultimatum to the Spanish government to resolve the ongoing migration crisis in the autonomous city. Vivas, describing the current situation as a state of emergency, threatened to escalate the matter to the Presidents of the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court if decisive action is not taken.

There is a significant discrepancy regarding the number of migrants currently in Ceuta. While the Spanish government previously claimed that normality had been restored with only 2,500 migrants remaining from an initial influx of 80,000, Vivas estimates the actual number is between 8,000 and 10,000.

In response to the crisis, the Spanish government is establishing temporary reception centers in locations such as a buffer parking lot and a former football field to accommodate 1,500 migrants. Additionally, 6.5 million euros have been allocated to the Red Cross to assist vulnerable individuals. The European Commission has supported the return of migrants remaining illegally in Ceuta to Morocco.
