Ceuta protesters burn migrant camp amid calls for deportation

Protesters in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta have set fire to a migrant camp, demanding the immediate deportation of thousands of migrants remaining in the territory. Demonstrators were filmed throwing belongings into fires and the sea, while some attempted to block Red Cross vehicles delivering food and water.

The unrest follows a massive influx of approximately 80,000 migrants from Morocco in late July, many of whom arrived by swimming. While most returned shortly after the initial surge, several thousand remain in the enclave. The situation has placed the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez under intense political pressure, with opposition leaders accusing the administration of inaction.

Legal and humanitarian complexities complicate the crisis. Spanish law and international agreements prohibit collective deportations, requiring individual assessments for each person. This includes protections for unaccompanied minors; approximately 1,500 children and teenagers are believed to be among the migrants, with 500 considered particularly vulnerable. The Spanish government is currently coordinating efforts to manage the population and prevent the spread of disease through vaccination programs.
