Ceuta reports rise in asylum claims based on sexual orientation

Authorities in Ceuta have reported a significant increase in asylum requests based on two primary arguments: persecution due to sexual orientation in Morocco and being victims of sexual violence. Some reports suggest these specific claims could represent between 70% and 90% of recent applications.

Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska addressed the situation, noting that while the Office of Asylum and Refuge handles resolutions, mere allegations are insufficient for granting international protection. He emphasized that applicants must provide “a reasonable proof of the determining circumstance” and “an objective and clear principle of proof” rather than simple claims.

There are ongoing concerns regarding whether certain organizations may be advising migrants on how to frame their stories to secure asylum. To date, approximately 1,200 international protection requests have been formalized, with around 700 cases having reached a resolution.
