Spain installs sea barrier after 60,000 migrants breach Ceuta, 67 dead FAST-MOVING
Between July 30 and August 1 2026, an estimated 50,000‑60,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, overwhelming the border. At least 67 people died – some drowned, others were killed in a stampede at a breakwater.
In response, Spain deployed a 500‑metre floating/pneumatic barrier at the Tarajal sea crossing and increased patrols. The interior ministry reported that the majority of the arrivals – more than 48,000 – were voluntarily returned to Morocco within 48 hours.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned EU leaders who called for Spain’s suspension from the Schengen area, calling the proposals “prejudice, fake news, ignorance or political interest.” Interior Minister Fernando Grande‑Marlaska said Morocco is not a threat and is a reliable partner. Twenty‑two EU member states sent a letter urging an extraordinary videoconference of interior ministers, and the Spanish left‑wing party Sumar asked the UN special rapporteur for an independent investigation into possible Moroccan responsibility.
