Ceuta migration crisis: Spain establishes unified command

The Spanish government is intensifying its response to the migration crisis in Ceuta following a mass influx of approximately 80,000 migrants from Morocco in late July. To manage the situation, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has convened an extraordinary meeting of the National Security Council to coordinate institutional efforts.

A key measure being implemented is the creation of a unified command structure, which will be led by Minister of Territorial Policy Ángel Víctor Torres. This command aims to streamline the management of asylum files, repatriation procedures, and the coordination of various ministries to improve efficiency in handling the crisis.

In addition to security and administrative measures, the government is addressing humanitarian and health concerns. This includes the planned deployment of 45,000 vaccine doses to the enclave to prevent disease outbreaks among the migrant population, which includes over 2,900 minors. Spain has also formally requested emergency assistance funding from the European Commission to bolster border protection and support reception capacities.
