Ceuta waste production rises 12% amid migration crisis
Ceuta has seen a 12% increase in monthly waste production following a recent migration crisis. Estimates from the central government suggest that between 9,000 and 10,000 migrants remain in the autonomous city after a mass arrival in late July.
This population increase, representing roughly 12% of Ceuta's total census of 83,595 inhabitants, has directly impacted urban refuse volumes. Monthly waste sent from the city has risen from approximately 3,000 tons to around 3,350 tons.
The waste is transported by boat across the Strait to the Southern Europe Environmental Complex in Los Barrios. Arcgisa, the public company managing waste and water for the Campo de Gibraltar region, has confirmed this increase in volume corresponds with the estimated migrant population currently in the city.
