Ceuta's historical ties to Portugal

The historical origins of Ceuta, a Spanish autonomous city located on the North African coast, are rooted in Portuguese conquest. The territory was captured by Portugal in 1415 and remained under Portuguese control until 1640.

Following the Portuguese restoration of independence in 1640, Ceuta chose to remain loyal to Spain. This historical connection is still reflected in the city's official flag, which features the coat of arms of Portugal and is identical to the flag used by the city of Lisbon. The enclave remains a unique geopolitical entity as a European territory situated on the African continent.
