Overview
The historical status of Ceuta is defined by its transition from Portuguese to Spanish control. Originally captured by Portugal in 1415, the territory remained under Portuguese sovereignty for 165 years.
During the 17th-century Iberian Union, the city's connection to Portugal weakened. Following the death of the Spanish monarch and the subsequent rise of the Braganza dynasty in 1640, Ceuta chose to remain loyal to the Spanish crown rather than joining the Portuguese restoration of independence. This decision was influenced by the city's reliance on supplies from Algeciras and Cádiz, the Castilianization of local nobility and clergy, and a lack of official orders to switch sides after Portuguese envoys were intercepted.
Today, Ceuta remains a Spanish autonomous city on the North African coast. Its historical Portuguese roots are still reflected in its official flag, which features the coat of arms of Portugal and is identical to the flag of Lisbon.
