Ceuta's Sidi Embarek cemetery holds remains of 90 migrants
The Sidi Embarek Muslim cemetery in Ceuta has become the final resting place for 90 migrants who died while attempting to reach Spain from Morocco between July 30 and 31. The mass influx of deaths occurred over a six-day period, a scale described by cemetery worker Said Mohamed as unprecedented compared to the usual one or two deaths per month.
Of the 90 fatalities, 82 bodies were initially recovered on Spanish territory, while additional remains were later found in the waters of Ceuta. Due to Morocco's refusal to take responsibility for the remains, the Ceuta City Council manages the burials at the Sidi Embarek site.
Identification efforts have been largely unsuccessful; only nine victims, including one teenager, have been identified. The remaining unidentified individuals are buried with minimal markers, using numbers that correspond to case files containing physical descriptions and personal belongings to facilitate potential future identification.
