Cevdet Yılmaz clarifies scope of Turkey's new solidarity law
Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz addressed discussions regarding the 'National Solidarity and Strengthening of Social Integration Law Proposal,' which recently passed the TBMM Justice Commission.
Yılmaz clarified that the proposed legal framework is intended as a general regulation and is not being tailored for specific individuals, specifically addressing questions about whether the law would impact political prisoner Selahattin Demirtaş. He emphasized that any application of the law to individuals remains a matter for the relevant judicial authorities. Furthermore, Yılmaz stated that PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan is not included within the scope of this specific regulation.
The Vice President noted that the cessation of armed conflict is a fundamental prerequisite for the legal processes to begin. He explained that once security forces and intelligence units confirm that weapons have been laid down, the National Security Council (MGK) will make a decision, which will then be published in the Official Gazette. The regulation will exclude crimes committed prior to 2005 as well as crimes involving the martyrdom of police and military personnel.
