CFE expands electrical infrastructure across Mexico
The Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) is implementing various infrastructure projects across Mexico to address energy demand and improve grid reliability. In Baja California Sur, investments totaling approximately 1,760 million pesos are underway to expand capacity and modernize networks in Los Cabos and La Paz. This includes the Buena Vista Banco 1 and Olas Altas Banco 2 projects, which are already operational, and a transformation capacity increase in Los Cabos expected by late 2027.
In the municipality of Los Cabos, a 38-million-peso partnership between the local government, the state, and CFE has begun to bring electricity to the rural communities of La Candelaria and Los Pozos. This project involves the installation of utility poles to provide grid access to families outside the primary tourist zones.
In the Yucatán Peninsula, however, infrastructure expansion faces delays. While combined-cycle plants in Mérida and Valladolid are ready to operate using natural gas from Texas, they remain offline due to an unfinished gas pipeline segment. This delay, alongside stalled bidding processes, has contributed to energy shortages in the region. Currently, the peninsula produces 1,600 MW of its 3,000 MW demand, relying heavily on imports from central Mexico.
