Mexico's CFE expands power, EV charging amid profit dip

Overview

Since June 2026, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has accelerated its capacity-expansion agenda. President Claudia Sheinbaum inaugurated the 653 MW González Ortega plant in Mexicali and the 357 MW Manzanillo III plant in Colima. Infrastructure improvements include a 75 MVA transformer at the Los Cabos Turbogas substation and high-capacity transformers in Tamaulipas to curb outages. CFE also launched a $600 million public Wi-Fi expansion, a five-year Energy-Efficiency Programme (2025–2030), and a 200 billion-peso transmission-modernisation plan. The electric-vehicle charging network grew to 60,932 connections. In partnership with Cubico Sustainable Investments, CFE is adding 578 MW of solar and wind capacity and 175.7 MW of battery storage starting in late 2026. In August 2026, the government unveiled the CFE Development Program 2026–2030. This strategic plan aims to increase generation capacity from 46.6 GW in 2025 to 70.7 GW by 2030, targeting a 53% share of the National Electric System. The plan focuses heavily on renewables, projecting 15.2 GW of clean capacity. To fund these goals, CFE plans to raise between $700 million and $1 billion through CFE Fibra E certificates, with potential participation from the International Finance Corporation. Regional infrastructure efforts have also expanded, with CFE announcing an investment of over 7.7 billion pesos in Querétaro between 2025 and 2029. This includes 1.284 billion pesos for 758 distribution projects and over 6.5 billion pesos for transmission projects, such as smart grid development. Local authorities noted that coordination with CFE has already reduced service interruptions by up to 25 percent. Financially, CFE reported a 30.7% drop in net profit for the first half of 2026 to 47.6 billion pesos. While EBITDA reached its highest level for a first-half period since 2018, earnings were weighed down by reduced foreign-exchange gains and higher financial expenses.
