CFE awards submarine power project for Cozumel to Mexican-Chinese consortium
The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is set to formalize a contract worth approximately 3.56 billion pesos (roughly 184.6 million USD) with a consortium to develop a new submarine electrical connection between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.
The winning consortium includes Entia de México, Cables Subterráneos, and the Chinese firm Zhongtian Technology Submarine Cable. The project, titled ‘354 SLT LT Corriente Alterna Submarina Playacar-Chankanaab II’, was awarded following an international public tender.
Beyond the submarine cable, the contract covers the design, construction, and installation of electrical infrastructure, including four substations, two transmission lines, one distribution line, and an underground network. Work is scheduled to begin on October 5, 2026, with a completion deadline of February 26, 2028. The project aims to increase energy capacity and reliability for Cozumel to meet rising demand.
