CFE submarine power project in Cozumel

Overview

The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) awarded a contract worth approximately 3.56 billion pesos to a Mexican-Chinese consortium to develop a submarine electrical connection between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. The project, titled ‘354 SLT LT Corriente Alterna Submarina Playacar-Chankanaab II’, involves the construction of a submarine cable, substations, and various transmission and distribution lines to increase energy reliability for Cozumel.

Following the project announcement, environmental activists and citizen collectives in Playa del Carmen began protesting the construction. Groups such as the Red por Chen Zubul have raised concerns regarding the impact on the Chen Zubul site, which they describe as a natural area covering more than 40 hectares. Protesters have challenged claims that the area lacks biological richness and are demanding independent environmental impact studies to prevent ecological damage.
