CFE reports 37% reduction in power interruptions amid regional service challenges

The Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) reports a 37% decrease in power interruptions between January and July 2026 compared to 2024, attributing the improvement to extensive preventive maintenance. This includes over 7.6 million tree pruning actions, thousands of transformer and pole replacements, and improved service restoration times, which dropped from 25 to 7 hours.

However, regional challenges persist. In Tabasco, maintenance resources reportedly fell by 24%, contributing to a 55% increase in blackouts. In Baja California Sur, a technical failure at the La Paz substation left thousands without power, prompting local officials to demand explanations regarding infrastructure reliability. Additionally, CFE is targeting illegal connections, or ‘diablitos,’ in Tamaulipas to prevent grid overloads.

In Sonora, the CFE has deployed over 3,000 maintenance and modernization actions across eight municipalities in the Sierra Alta region to stabilize the supply. Meanwhile, in Veracruz, a lightning strike caused a fire at a storage terminal in Coatzacoalcos, though emergency protocols prevented injuries.
