Power outages in Baja California Sur

The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has been working to restore power in Baja California Sur following infrastructure failures and damage caused by weather.

In Los Cabos, strong winds and rainfall resulted in downed cables, fallen poles, and uprooted trees. CFE reported a 60% restoration rate in areas including Cabo del Este, La Ribera, and parts of San José del Cabo, with full service expected by Tuesday afternoon.

In La Paz, a failure at the La Paz Substation affected approximately 6,200 users. As of Tuesday, 93% of service had been restored, leaving 920 users without electricity in sectors such as Pichilingue and Melitón Albáñez. Technical teams are installing replacement equipment to normalize the system.

Recent reporting confirms that the technical failure at the La Paz substation was addressed through the deployment of backup equipment, which facilitated the 93% restoration rate.

Broader CFE data indicates a 37% decrease in power interruptions nationwide between January and July 2026 compared to 2024, credited to preventive maintenance such as tree pruning and equipment replacement. Despite these national improvements, regional challenges remain; specifically, the technical failure at the La Paz substation has prompted local officials to demand explanations regarding the reliability of the infrastructure.
