Chacahua Bay community conducts large-scale cleanup

Volunteers, local authorities, and members of the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP) conducted a cleanup operation at Chacahua Bay within the Lagunas de Chacahua National Park in Oaxaca.

During a three-hour session on August 10, 27 volunteers collected 131.1 kilograms of waste from the stone pier and 'La Playita' area. The collected debris included 49 kg of PET, 41 kg of plastic packaging and bags, 35 kg of glass, 3.65 kg of iron, and 2.45 kg of aluminum cans.

The initiative included an environmental awareness talk focused on reducing single-use plastics and promoting reusable containers to protect marine species, such as sea turtles and fish, from ingesting waste or becoming trapped in debris. The effort was supported by the Environmental Protection and Ecology Committee, local police, and tourism service providers.
