Mexico and Chile waste removal drives
Overview
By late August 2026, waste removal efforts in Mexico and Chile continued through various municipal, volunteer, and national initiatives. In Mexico, operations included the removal of 1.775 tonnes of waste from Playa Azul in Michoacán and a cleanup at Chacahua Bay in Oaxaca, both supporting the National Strategy for the Cleaning and Conservation of Mexico's Beaches and Coasts 2025–2030.
In Chile, coastal cleanup activities expanded significantly in late September and early October. In Iquique, a community event was organized at Playa Brava for International Coastal Cleanup Day to promote coastal care and waste awareness, aligning with the RE-genera Chile framework.
In Caldera, an initiative organized by the Corporación de Turismo Sustentable Bahía de Caldera utilized 5 million pesos to fund equipment and transportation for cleaning campaigns across Brava, Las Machas, Rocas Negras, and Bahía Cisne. Participants recovered glass, metal, plastics, wood, and cigarette butts. Atacama Governor Miguel Vargas emphasized that such efforts support regenerative tourism and the protection of natural heritage.
By early October, cleanup efforts extended through the Atacama and Coquimbo regions. As part of the International Coastal Cleanup program, Compañía Minera del Pacífico (CMP) participated in cleaning Playa Mansa in Caldera, the beach in Huasco, and El Faro in La Serena, organized by DIRECTEMAR and the NGO Ocean Conservancy. Additionally, in Hualpén, the Directorate of Environment and Ecotourism called for a community cleanup at Playa Ramuntcho to foster local environmental care.
