Chad implements emergency measures to combat food insecurity

Chad is facing potential food insecurity due to irregular and declining rainfall, which threatens the national agricultural campaign and cereal production. In response to the risk of a food crisis, President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno has visited the Office national de sécurité alimentaire (ONASA) to inspect food reserves and ensure adequate stocks are available.

The government has implemented several emergency measures, including a ban on cereal exports and tax exemptions on the importation of food products and agricultural equipment. President Deby Itno has also committed to the free distribution of food supplies to the most affected provinces and has warned traders against abusive price increases.

Abderrahmane Gademi, the provisional administrator of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Agriculture, Mines and Crafts (CCIAMA), expressed support for these government initiatives. He noted that the measures are crucial for safeguarding food reserves, maintaining market supply, and protecting citizen purchasing power amidst the drought.
