Chad agricultural and mining regulatory measures
Overview
To bolster food security and support the domestic agricultural sector, the Chadian government implemented economic measures including import duty and tax exemptions for various food staples, animal feed, and essential agricultural equipment. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry banned the export of several commodities, such as millet, maize, rice, sorghum, and wheat, to ensure domestic supply.
As the situation progressed, these measures were identified as emergency responses to food shortages caused by severe heatwaves and drought, which have particularly impacted the central, eastern, and northern regions. The drought has led to destroyed crops, dried water sources, and declining livestock productivity.
In addition to agricultural restrictions, the Minister of Mines, Petroleum and Geology announced a suspension of all new mining prospecting authorizations nationwide as the government works to develop a new mining code.
