Chad military on high alert after Sudanese aerial incursion

The Chadian military has placed its forces on high alert following an aerial incursion by aircraft and drones linked to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). On August 20, 2026, the strikes targeted a convoy of more than ten vehicles approximately 100 kilometers inside Chadian territory in the Ennedi-Est Province.

The targeted convoy was reportedly traveling from Libya toward Sudan. While no Chadian casualties were reported, the Chadian National Assembly condemned the strike as a “grave and unacceptable violation” of sovereignty. Analysts suggest the convoy may have consisted of diverse combatants—including Chadian, Libyan, and Sudanese elements—potentially heading to support the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

This incident follows a pattern of cross-border violence in 2026, including previous clashes in January and February that resulted in Chadian military and civilian casualties. The porous 1,300-kilometer border remains a flashpoint due to the ongoing Sudanese civil war and the presence of hundreds of thousands of refugees in Chad.
