Sudanese conflict spillover into Chad
Overview
On August 20, 2026, the Chadian military reported an aerial incursion in the Ennedi Est province, where aircraft and drones—potentially belonging to the Sudanese Armed Forces or their allies—bombed a vehicle column. The strike reportedly extended more than 100 kilometers into Chadian territory.
While initial reports indicated no Chadian casualties, subsequent details clarified that the targeted convoy, consisting of more than ten vehicles, was traveling from Libya toward Sudan. Analysts suggested the convoy may have contained Chadian, Libyan, and Sudanese combatants potentially moving to support the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Additionally, an air strike on a fuel market used by the RSF reportedly killed 12 people and injured seven.
In response, the Chadian General Staff raised alert levels to the maximum, deploying approximately 100 armored vehicles and signal-jamming trucks near the border town of Tine. The Chadian National Assembly condemned the strike as a “grave and unacceptable violation” of sovereignty.
On August 27, 2026, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the accusations, expressing surprise that allegations were made “before any professional and independent investigation” could be conducted. Sudan emphasized its respect for Chadian sovereignty and advocated for direct dialogue. Concurrently, Sudan criticized the international community for its silence regarding drone attacks launched from Ethiopia targeting Sudanese territory, claiming to possess “conclusive evidence” of such incursions.
On the same day, the Sudanese army announced it shot down a “hostile strategic” drone in Blue Nile State, marking the third such incident in five days. The African Union has since called for restraint to prevent further regional escalation.
