Senegal parliamentary commission rejects 2026 revised budget

The Finance and Budgetary Control Commission of the National Assembly in Senegal has rejected the 2026 supplementary budget bill (LFR) and two government amendments. The decision follows days of intense debate between the executive branch and the Pastef-Les Patriotes parliamentary group.

Pastef, led by Ousmane Sonko, has expressed significant opposition to the current draft, citing concerns over reduced social spending and public investment. The group has demanded the preservation of budgets for health, education, and infrastructure, as well as greater transparency regarding state debt and the management of political funds. Specifically, deputies have called for a re-examination of cuts affecting vocational training and hydraulics, while also seeking clarity on 120 billion FCFA related to the Contingent Emergency Response Project (CERP).

The government, represented by ministers Cheikh Diba and Bassirou Sarr, has faced criticism for proposed reductions in subsidies for petroleum products. While the commission's rejection does not end the legislative process, it marks a major political impasse. The bill must still undergo examination in a plenary session, which has been subject to delays as parties seek a consensus.
