Chad receives 400,000 returnees from Sudan conflict
The International Organization for Migration reported that more than 400,000 Chadian nationals have returned from Sudan since the war began in 2023. About 58 % of the returnees are women and 69 % are children, and most settle in spontaneous sites or host‑community locations in Chad’s eastern provinces of Ouaddaï, Wadi Fira, Sila and Salamat. The influx has heightened demand for shelter, safe water, household items, health services and protection. UN agencies warned that a solely emergency‑focused response is insufficient and called for expanded humanitarian assistance combined with livelihood support, community infrastructure investment and locally‑led recovery programmes. Ongoing peace talks between Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces remain stalled, prolonging the displacement pressure on Chad’s border regions.
