Chad strengthens humanitarian and migration cooperation with UN and IOM

The Chadian government has signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations humanitarian team to improve the management and coordination of aid within the country. Signed in N’Djamena by Minister of Social Action Zara Mahamat Issa and UN Humanitarian Coordinator François Batalingaya, the agreement aims to strengthen the role of national institutions in leading humanitarian responses, particularly in sectors like health and education.

This reform comes as Chad faces a delicate humanitarian situation driven by significant internal displacement and a massive influx of refugees fleeing the conflict in Sudan. The goal is to better align humanitarian aid with long-term development and peacebuilding efforts while ensuring the state maintains primary responsibility for aid organization.

In a separate development, Chadian officials met with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to discuss strengthening cooperation regarding the return and reintegration of migrants. Discussions focused on supporting Chadian nationals returning to the country and providing protection for foreign migrants within Chad, addressing the large-scale population movements caused by the regional crisis.
