Explosion in Chalco, Mexico kills one and injures another

A powerful explosion occurred in a pyrotechnics workshop (polvorín) in the municipality of Chalco, State of Mexico, on the afternoon of July 22, 2026. The blast generated a large white smoke column visible for several kilometres and was heard at a distance of many kilometres. Emergency services—including fire brigades, Protection Civil, the National Guard, the Mexican Army and local police—rapidly cordoned the site and extinguished the fire.

One worker, identified as 31‑year‑old César Augusto, died instantly in the explosion. A second victim, 65‑year‑old José Manuel León Leite, suffered severe burns and was taken to the Hospital Regional de Alta Especialidad de Ixtapaluca for treatment. No other injuries or evacuations of nearby homes were reported. The incident took place in a deserted area of the San Gregorio Cuautzingo zone, an area previously authorized for the manufacture or storage of pyrotechnic material.

The State of Mexico’s Fiscalía General de Justicia opened an investigation to determine whether the explosion resulted from a handling error, storage failure or lack of proper permits. Authorities also announced social assistance for the family of the deceased.
