Greek government officials have announced a relief package and infrastructure restoration plan following devastating wildfires in the Chalkidiki region, specifically affecting the Kassandra municipality and Sivri.

Konstantinos Katsafados, Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, announced that 3.5 million euros will be allocated for infrastructure repairs, with 2.5 million euros designated for the Municipality of Kassandra and 1 million euros for the Chalkidiki Regional Unit. This funding is expected to be approved by the Government Committee for State Aid in early September.

For affected citizens, household and basic necessity allowances will be processed within 10 days of the municipality submitting the relevant request. Household allowances will range from 2,000 to 6,000 euros depending on damage, while basic necessity allowances are set at 600 euros. Additionally, the state has committed to covering 100% of the costs for repairing or reconstructing homes classified as ‘yellow’ or ‘red’ due to damage, and up to 60% for business equipment and machinery.

Minister of Rural Development Margaritis Schoinas noted that approximately 10,000 properties were saved during the incident, describing the response as a ‘feat of coordination.’ Ongoing inspections continue to assess damage to homes and municipal facilities, including the Sivri Amphitheater and sewage treatment plants.
