Challenger 3 tank reaches 2,000 km testing milestone
The Challenger 3, the British Army’s next-generation main battle tank, has reached a significant testing milestone. Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) reported that the vehicle has completed 2,000 kilometers of driving and fired over 200 main gun rounds, along with 100 smoke grenades.
As part of an £800 million contract, RBSL is upgrading 148 Challenger 2 tanks to the Challenger 3 standard. This modernization includes a new turret, advanced aiming equipment, digital systems, and enhanced modular armor. A key upgrade is the installation of a Rheinmetall 120mm L55A1 smoothbore gun, which will allow the British Army to use NATO-standard ammunition, including new kinetic energy penetrators and programmable multi-purpose rounds.
Planned protection upgrades include the integration of Israel’s Rafael Trophy active protection system to intercept incoming anti-tank missiles and rockets. Following the current phase, testing will enter a more rigorous stage in November to further stress the vehicle and its new systems. The project aims to provide the foundation for the British Army’s heavy armored capabilities through at least 2040.
