British Army Challenger 3 tank development
Overview
The development of the Challenger 3 main battle tank has progressed through significant testing and prototyping phases. Initially, Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) reported that the vehicle reached a milestone of 2,000 kilometers driven and over 200 main gun rounds fired as part of an £800 million contract to upgrade 148 Challenger 2 tanks.
Following these initial tests, the British Army received seven prototypes for demonstration and validation. These vehicles are undergoing fire, mobility, electromagnetic compatibility, and safety trials at the Bovington range. The modernization program focuses on installing a new turret with a 120mm L55A1 smoothbore gun, modular armor, and an active protection system to ensure the fleet remains viable through at least 2040.
