Champagne grape harvest faces early start and recruitment pressure

The 2026 grape harvest in the Champagne region of France is experiencing record early maturation due to exceptional heat and drought. This accelerated timeline has forced winemakers to begin harvesting earlier than usual, with the first cuts reported in Montgueux as early as August 6.

This climatic shift presents significant logistical challenges, particularly regarding seasonal recruitment. The Champagne region requires approximately 120,000 seasonal workers annually to manually harvest its 34,200 hectares of vineyards. To address the compressed schedule, the Comité Champagne and France Travail have renewed their 'Champagne Vendanges' initiative, aiming to facilitate 4,500 assisted recruitments.

In addition to the timing shifts, yields are expected to decrease. The marketable yield for 2026 has been set at 8,800 kilograms per hectare, down from 9,000 kilograms the previous year. This reduction is attributed to both climatic conditions and a strategic economic decision by the industry to align supply with market tensions.
