In early August, the French Ministry of Agriculture postponed its customary early‑August harvest outlook to 8 September, citing the combined impact of heat, drought, storms, hail and fires. Jérôme Despey of the wine and cider council explained the delay aims to avoid large forecast errors. In the Var region, recent forest fires raise concerns about smoke taint; growers are testing grapes for smoke compounds and adopting parcel‑by‑parcel harvesting to manage risk.
