Chan Chan archaeologists discover 38 intact Chimú elite tombs

Archaeologists have discovered an intact funerary platform containing the remains of 38 individuals at the Chan Chan archaeological complex in La Libertad, Peru. Located within the Utzh An walled enclosure—part of the ancient Chimú Kingdom capital—the find is significant because it has remained protected from looting for nearly 600 years.

The platform consists of a central chamber and two side chambers at varying depths. The central chamber contained the remains of a high-status individual accompanied by metal and shell artifacts. The side chambers held weapons, metal emblems, and approximately 20 individuals, joining 18 others identified in the same context.

Researchers noted one specific burial that deviates from standard Chimú practices. While most individuals were typically buried in flexed or seated positions, this person was found completely extended. Experts from the Ministry of Culture suggest this unique arrangement may indicate an exceptional hierarchical status or a specific sacrificial ritual, though further study is required to confirm.
