Chimú elite tomb discovery in Chan Chan

Overview

Archaeologists at the Chan Chan archaeological complex in La Libertad, Peru, have discovered an almost intact funerary platform within the Utzh An walled enclosure. Dating back approximately 600 years, the site belongs to the ancient Chimú culture and has remained protected from looting.

The discovery includes the remains of 38 high-status individuals distributed across a central chamber and two side chambers. The central chamber contained one individual accompanied by metal and shell artifacts, while the lateral chambers held weapons, metal emblems, and 20 additional bodies. Other recovered items include necklaces, ear ornaments, metal headdresses, carved wooden boxes, quartz pieces, and sacred red pigment.

Researchers identified a notable anomaly in the burial practices: while most individuals were buried in flexed or seated positions, one skeleton was found in a completely extended position. Experts from the Ministry of Culture suggest this deviation may signify an exceptional hierarchical status or a specific sacrificial ritual.
