Chan Chan discovery: Intact 600-year-old elite tombs found in Peru

The Peruvian Ministry of Culture has announced the exceptional discovery of an almost intact funerary platform within the Utzh An walled complex, part of the Chan Chan Archaeological Complex. The site contains the remains of 38 high-status individuals dating back approximately 600 years, belonging to the Chimú culture.

The structure is divided into three main sections: a central chamber containing one individual surrounded by metal and shell artifacts, and two lateral chambers. One lateral chamber held weapons and metal emblems, while the other contained 20 bodies. In total, 38 remains were identified across the platform.

Archaeologists noted a significant anomaly: one skeleton was found in a completely extended position. This deviates from the traditional Chimú funerary practice of burying individuals in flexed or seated positions. Researchers suggest this unique arrangement may indicate an extreme hierarchical distinction or a ritual sacrifice. The site also yielded various elite goods, including necklaces, ear ornaments, metal headdresses, carved wooden boxes, quartz pieces, and sacred red pigment.
