Changan Automobile plans Australian launch of Avatr premium brand

Chinese automotive manufacturer Changan Automobile appears to be expanding its presence in Australia through the planned launch of its premium brand, Avatr. Recent job advertisements in Sydney for roles such as a senior marketing manager for a ‘new premium automotive brand’ and a network development manager suggest the brand is preparing for a local market entry.

Avatr, which is majority-owned by Changan with significant minority investment from battery manufacturer CATL and close ties to Huawei, offers a lineup of electric vehicles and range-extended EVs. This expansion follows Changan’s existing involvement in the Australian market via its sub-brand Deepal, which is currently distributed by Inchcape.

Despite Changan’s move to establish its own brand, Inchcape Australia has confirmed there are no plans for Changan to take over the distribution of Deepal vehicles from them. Inchcape, which also distributes Subaru and Foton, remains focused on growing Deepal’s market presence following the December 2024 commencement of deliveries for the S07 electric SUV.
