Changan launches Deepal S05 plug‑in hybrid SUV in Europe

Changan unveiled the Deepal S05 PHEV at a launch event in Barcelona, introducing its first European‑market Ultra‑Hybrid SUV. The model combines a 1.5‑litre gasoline engine with a 172 kW electric motor for a total output of 190 kW (258 hp) and a claimed combined range of over 1,000 km, including up to 100 km on electric power alone. It is equipped with an 18.4 kWh LFP battery, a 51‑liter fuel tank and fuel‑consumption figures of 2.03 L/100 km in hybrid mode and 5.4 L/100 km when the engine runs alone.

Pricing starts at €35,990 for the Pro version and €38,990 for the Max trim, with introductory offers reducing the price to €24,990‑27,990 after applying up to €4,500 of government subsidies. Changan has already sold about 1,500 units of the S05 and its sibling S07 in its first four months, and it operates 65 dealerships across 17 European markets, planning to expand to 100 by year‑end.

German and other European road tests highlight the vehicle’s long‑range capability, quiet cabin and design by former VW chief designer Klaus Zyciora. At the same time, Changan’s European chief, Ethan Yin, confirmed that the company is studying the possibility of opening a production plant in Spain, aiming to sell a minimum of 6,000 cars there by 2026. The move reflects a strategy to offer both fully electric and plug‑in hybrid models in response to EU trade policies that favor PHEVs over pure EVs.
