Changdeokgung Palace to open Daejojeon royal quarters to public
The Changdeokgung Palace Management Office is launching a special guided tour program titled ‘The Living Space of the King and Queen, Entering the Inner Palace of Changdeokgung’ from October 20 to 31. This program offers a rare look into the interior of Huijeongdang and Daejojeon, which served as the living and working quarters for the Joseon royal family.
Notably, Daejojeon, the living space of the queen, will be opened to the general public for the first time this year. Following a reconstruction in 1920 after a fire in 1917, these halls showcase a unique blend of traditional Korean architecture and modern Western influences, including Western-style wallpaper, glass windows, carpets, and electric lamps.
Visitors can view various royal paintings, such as reproductions of Geumgangsan landscapes and depictions of phoenixes and white cranes. The tour also includes historical features like a guest restroom in Huijeongdang and a suspected barbershop in Daejojeon used by King Sunjong. The program is free for adults aged 19 and older, though palace admission fees apply. Participation is limited to 24 people per session and is determined via a pre-registration lottery.
