Chang’e-6 samples reveal unique gamma iron on the Moon
Researchers analyzing soil samples returned by China’s Chang’e-6 mission have discovered gamma iron (γ-Fe) in natural lunar material for the first time. The iron particles are trapped within tiny pieces of impact glass formed during lunar surface strikes. Because gamma iron typically only exists at high temperatures and usually transforms into alpha iron upon cooling, its preservation suggests unique conditions, such as rapid cooling or protection by the surrounding glass.
These findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, offer new insights into the Moon’s ancient magnetic history. Some of the larger gamma iron particles exhibit stable magnetic vortex states, acting as ‘magnetic fossils’ that could help scientists understand how the Moon’s magnetic field functioned in the past.
Separately, studies of lunar probes suggest the Moon once possessed a significant magnetic field. A large, dense rock formation on the Moon's far side, potentially an ancient volcanic complex, indicates a magnetic field existed approximately 4.2 billion years ago. Researchers estimate this ancient field was between one-fifth and one-third the strength of Earth’s current magnetic field.
