Chang’e-6 lunar sample analysis

Overview

Analysis of soil samples returned by China’s Chang’e-6 mission has revealed the presence of gamma iron (γ-Fe) in natural lunar material. This discovery is significant because gamma iron typically only exists at high temperatures and usually transforms into alpha iron upon cooling.

Researchers hypothesize that the iron was preserved through extreme temperature spikes, such as meteorite impacts, followed by rapid cooling that “froze” the iron in its high-temperature state. The presence of small amounts of carbon may have also helped stabilize the structure.

These findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, provide new insights into the Moon’s ancient magnetic history. Some larger gamma iron particles exhibit stable magnetic vortex states, acting as ‘magnetic fossils’ that may help scientists understand how the Moon’s magnetic field functioned in the past.
