KMT Changhua mayoral nomination dispute intensifies

Tensions within the Kuomintang (KMT) regarding the Changhua County mayoral nomination have escalated following the establishment of Wei Ping-cheng’s campaign headquarters. Current Changhua County Magistrate Wang Hui-mei did not attend the event, instead sending a flower basket with the message “smooth and successful” rather than the traditional “win by a large margin,” fueling further speculation regarding party unity.

Wang Hui-mei previously expressed deep frustration over the nomination process, alleging that the party leadership, specifically KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wen, had predetermined Wei Ping-cheng as the candidate without meaningful consultation. Wang claimed she was often informed of party decisions through news reports rather than direct communication and felt her suggestions for a more strategic candidate were ignored.

During the headquarters launch, Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen and KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wen appeared to support Wei, with Lu urging him to fight hard despite lacking significant political background or central party resources. Meanwhile, Wang Hui-mei took to social media to share personal photos and express her commitment to doing “what is right for Changhua,” a move interpreted by some observers as a sign of increasing political distance from the KMT.
