The race for the Changhua County Magistrate position has entered the registration phase, marked by candidate filings and shifting political alliances. Four-term independent county councilor Chen Chung-chia was the first to complete registration, paying a deposit of 160,000 TWD. Chen, the son of former legislators Chen Chao-jung and Yu Yueh-hsia, stated his decision was driven by dissatisfaction with the Blue, Green, and White camps, claiming they prioritize partisan interests over the future of Changhua. Kuomintang (KMT) nominee Wei Ping-cheng has also officially registered, pledging to transform Changhua into ‘Taiwan’s seventh metropolis’ and continue the administration of former magistrate Wang Hui-mei. However, the campaign faces internal complexities as Wang has not appeared to support Wei. Internal friction has since emerged within the KMT regarding this nomination. Wang Hui-mei released a statement alleging she had previously advised the party to consider different candidates and requested a delay in the nomination to allow for further deliberation. Wang claimed that after a meeting with KMT Chairperson Cheng Li-wen in May, communication from the Chairperson ceased. The KMT Communications Committee stated that while there are discrepancies between Wang’s account and Cheng’s memory of certain discussions, the party takes the matter seriously and expressed a desire to meet with Wang to resolve misunderstandings. In an attempt to bridge the gap, Wei Ping-cheng tried to personally deliver an invitation to Wang for his campaign headquarters launch ceremony on September 6. Although the invitation was received by her secretary, Wang was unavailable. Following the establishment of Wei’s campaign headquarters, tensions have escalated. Wang did not attend the launch, instead sending a flower basket with the message ‘smooth and successful’ rather than the traditional ‘win by a large margin,’ fueling speculation regarding party unity.
