Chania Cooperative Bank joins EU digital euro pilot program

The Cooperative Bank of Chania (Συνεταιριστική Τράπεζα Χανίων) has been selected by the Euro system to participate in the pilot program for developing and testing a digital euro. It is one of 36 European banks and payment‑service providers involved in shaping the future of electronic transactions in the EU.

The pilot is slated to begin in the second half of 2027 and will run for twelve months, with the bank acting as a payment‑service provider in partnership with the Bank of Greece and under the framework set by the Euro system. Bank President Michael Marakakis said, “The selection is a great honour and recognises our commitment to innovation and modern payment services, helping build the new digital infrastructure of the European economy.” The participation underscores the bank’s strategic focus on digital transformation and offering secure, advanced financial solutions to its customers in Greece.
