Chania: Fatal head-on collision on BOAK leaves one dead

A fatal head-on collision occurred on Saturday afternoon on the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) near the Platanias junction, heading toward Kissamos. The accident involved a private car carrying an elderly Greek man and a female passenger, and a rental van carrying a Swiss family of five, including three children aged 4 to 12.

The elderly driver of the car, approximately 70 years old, was pulled from the vehicle unconscious and has died. The female passenger was extricated by firefighters with serious injuries. From the van, a mother and one child sustained head injuries and were transported to Chania Hospital. Notably, the 4-year-old child in the van was using a specialized safety seat and avoided serious injury.

Preliminary reports suggest the car veered into the oncoming lane, striking the van. The Swiss family had picked up the rental vehicle from Heraklion Airport and was traveling toward Kolymbari. Authorities are conducting an investigation to determine the exact causes of the crash.
