Fatal car accident in Chania, Crete
Overview
On October 17, a fatal head-on collision occurred on the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) near the Platanias junction. The accident involved a private car and a rental van carrying a Swiss family of five. The driver of the car, later identified as prominent Chania businessman Manolis Rodousakis, died at the scene.
Rodousakis’s wife, Maria, sustained injuries in the crash. Members of the Swiss family, including a mother and one child, were transported to Chania Hospital with head injuries, though a 4-year-old child in the van avoided serious injury by using a specialized safety seat.
Rodousakis was a well-known local figure involved in various businesses, including a car dealership and a gas station. He had previously gained national attention for a road safety initiative in 2024 regarding helmet use for motorcyclists. Local traffic police are investigating the circumstances of the collision, which preliminary reports suggest occurred when the car veered into the oncoming lane.
