Chania: Two elderly women die at separate beaches

Two elderly women died on Wednesday morning at separate beaches in the Chania region of Crete. The incidents occurred approximately 15 minutes apart.

The first woman, aged 80, was pulled unconscious from the sea at Agioi Apostoloi. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts by a lifeguard and medical assistance from EKAB, she was pronounced dead at the Chania General Hospital.

Shortly after, a 79-year-old foreign national was pulled unconscious from the water at Kolymbaria beach. She was also transported to Chania General Hospital, where she was confirmed dead.

The Chania Port Authority is conducting a preliminary investigation. Authorities are considering whether the deaths were caused by underlying medical conditions that manifested while in the water rather than drowning. Autopsies have been ordered by the Forensic Service of Crete to determine the exact causes of death.
