Elderly fatalities at Crete beaches
Overview
Two elderly women died at separate beaches in the Chania region of Crete on a Wednesday morning. The incidents occurred approximately 15 minutes apart.
The first victim, aged 80, was pulled unconscious from the sea at Agioi Apostoloi. Despite resuscitation efforts by a lifeguard and medical assistance, she was pronounced dead at Chania General Hospital. Shortly after, a 79-year-old foreign national was pulled unconscious from the water at Kolymbaria beach and also died at the hospital.
The Chania Port Authority is conducting a preliminary investigation. Authorities are investigating whether the deaths were caused by drowning or underlying medical conditions. Autopsies have been ordered by the Forensic Service of Crete to determine the exact causes of death.
