Channel 4 documentary faces 9,000 Ofcom complaints

Channel 4 has received 9,656 complaints following the broadcast of its documentary, ‘The Great ADHD Myth?’. The complaints were recorded by the regulator Ofcom between August 18 and August 24.

The programme, featuring NHS psychiatrist Dr Max Pemberton, investigates whether Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a genuine neurodevelopmental disorder or a social construct. It specifically examines the rise in diagnoses and whether psychiatric medications, such as amphetamines, should be used to treat children.

Critics, including the charity ADHD UK and cognitive neuroscience professor Katya Rubia, have condemned the documentary. Professor Rubia stated her comments were ‘cherrypicked, largely misrepresented, truncated’. Other critics have described the content as containing oversimplified observations and sensationalist soundbites that could damage those affected by the condition.

Channel 4 defended the programme, stating its remit includes providing a platform for alternative views, stimulating public debate, and challenging the status quo.
