Chapecó pre-hospital blood transfusion saves 13-year-old

A 13-year-old boy has been discharged from the Hospital Regional do Oeste (HRO) after surviving a gunshot wound to the head. The survival was attributed to the ‘Sangue Total’ (Total Blood) pre-hospital transfusion program.

On October 12, 2026, the SAMU Aeromédico team performed the transfusion at the scene in Chapecó before transporting the patient. The intervention helped control shock caused by excessive blood loss and stabilized vital signs alongside intubation and medication.

The Santa Catarina Hematology and Hemotherapy Center (HEMOSC) provides blood bags to SAMU Aeromédico bases for emergencies. These bags are stored between 2°C and 6°C and remain usable for up to 21 days. The program currently operates in the regions of Grande Florianópolis, Blumenau, Chapecó, Lages, and Criciúma, having treated 198 patients to date.
